Hans Theessink’s the closest thing to Ry Cooder other than Cooder himself. Wishing Well is all Theesink, acoustic and folky, but with plenty of soul. For Townes Van Zandt’s “Snowin‘ On Raton,” he’s very Leonard Cohen-ish, rumbling along quietly in low gear but still pulling plenty of weight along with him. Theesink’s version of Brownie McGhee’s“Living With the Blues” is softer than the original, vocally and instrumentally, but his is just as intense, just at a lower volume. His take on Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of Hollis Brown” is just as creepy and sinister as the original, with Dave Pearlman’s pedal steel guitar snippets snaking around his feet as Theessink mumbles the lyrics as so as not to get them riled up enough to strike.

De brommende bariton wordt van een uitgebreid arsenaal snaarinstrumenten ondersteund en op zijn 65ste graaft Theessink stokoude traditionals op die met eigen werk worden vermengd.
In een bijzonder fraaie interpretatie van ‚Snowin‘ On Raton‘ van oude vriend Townes Van Zandt, valt Theessink terug op zijn fraaie fingerpicking. ‚Alberta Let Your Hair Hang Down Low‘ is een ontroerende ode aan de legendarische banjoman Derroll Adams. Maar ook een simpel liefdesliedje als ‚Didn’t We Try‘ wordt tot een te koesteren pareltje getransformeerd. Hans Theessink blijft ook buiten bluesland een boeiende figuur.

Allemaal in de onmiskenbare Hans Theessink-stijl, en dat betekent dat je hier een soort mellow blues krijgt, die uitermate relaxed en laid-back klinkt, maar die volledig doordrenkt is van de melancholie, terwijl de warme stem van de man en de bloedmooie arrangementen er tegelijkertijd voor zorgen dat je van deze muziek eigenlijk nooit triest of treurig kunt worden. Een beetje melancholiek, dat wel misschien.

Nu er han aktuel med den akustiske – nærmest klassiske – americana-blues cd »Wishing Well« med 14 kompositioner, der er holdt »tæt på gulvet« i et tilrøget hjørne af det lokale vandhul. Der er meget langt til tidens juhu-pop og eksalterede rap, og tak for det. Her kan man faktisk høre hans eminente guitarspil, og Theessink behøver heller ikke autotune på sin vokal, hvis dybe baryton passer perfekt til genren. ★★★★★

Hans rå baryton-stemme giver liv til den amerikanske folkesjæl i numre som Wayfaring Stranger, blueskongen Brownie McGhees Living with the Blues, Bob Dylans Ballad of Hollis Brown og egne kompositioner som Kathmandu og titelnummeret Wishing Well. I alt 14 skæringer for americanafreaks, der ikke vil nøjes med at høre »the real thing« på den årlige Tønder Festival, som han har deltaget i siden Ruder Konge var knægt. Imponerende.

At bluesmusikken har ældgamle rødder er en rutinemæssig floskel; at de gamle sange i sig selv har rod i meget konkret, menneskelig lidelse i forskellige former, er vi måske mere tilbøjelige til at glemme. Nuvel, uden at hæve stemmen eller ødsle med virkemidlerne minder Theessink os faktisk om det på disse velvalgte og udelukkende akustisk udførte greb tilbage i genrens store katalog. Theessink er stadig den stilsikre strengemester, som aldrig lader teknisk virtuositet eller forkærlighed for autentisk årgangs-udstyr fjerne fokus fra den Gode Sang. Og som sådan er intet nyt absolut godt nyt her, når sangene hedder Delia, Ballad of Hollis Brown eller Snowing on Raton. ★★★★★

Hans Theessink är efter 40 år paa bluesscener runt um i världen ett aktat namn och fortfarande i full fart. På „Wishing Well“ möter vi en avslappnad atmosfär. Det känns som om Hans Theessink sitter intill dig och framför egne låtar och några av bland andra Bob Dylan och Townes van Zandt, som han framtrådde med flera gångar. Det är svärt att inte gripes av hans röst och fantastiska fingerfärdighet.

Musiken på Wishing Well er riktig bra och rör sig mellan deltablues, old time, folkballader och fingerpicking/ragtime. Theessink behärskar stilarna till fulländning. Jag nämnar bara några av de utmärkta låtarna; Hellbound, en fantastisk ballad med apokalyptisk atmosfär; Delia, en gammal ballad, här mycket nedtonad. Faktum är att alla låtar är bra.
Theessink har en behaglig, mörk och lite småskrovlig röst, en ärrad röst som vet att berätta om livets vedermödor och besvikelser, men inte med bitterhet. Här ryms, under vemodet, hopp och skicklighet som dock aldrig övergår i styva-linan-fasoner. En fasligt trevlig skiva.
